Why Universal Background Checks Don’t Work

Is it too early to say I told you so? I warned you that if Democrats won the House they would put gun control at the top of their 2019 agenda, despite assuring voters they wouldn’t. Democrats don’t change their spots, they only lie.

House Democrats aren’t even being shy about their gun control efforts. Their official agenda has a few measures that they love to push as obvious solutions to murder. Anyone who thinks about it for even a minute will understand why these measures can’t possibly work.

For now, I’ll simplify the conversation and just look at universal background checks. They can’t work. I’ll prove it, and then I’ll explain Democrats real motivation behind these laws.

A Little Data Goes a Long Way

Let’s cut to the chase. There is plenty of data on background checks and how they impact gun and violent crimes. Just looking at 2018, it’s clear that universal background checks can’t work. Consider the most infamous shootings of the year. The synagogue shooter (I still won’t condone using these monsters’ names) passed a background check for every weapon he owned.

The same is true for the Oakland nightclub shooter. The high school shooter in Texas killed 10 people with stolen guns. Democrats aren’t calling for a background check on gun thefts. Odd.

As for the Annapolis murderer, all background checks were passed with flying colors. As is the case for the Parkland shooter. The only notorious shooter who didn’t pass background checks was the Waffle House killer. Oh wait. He did pass his background checks. He then had his guns confiscated on grounds of mental instability. Then, he stole guns and went on a rampage anyway. He proved two laws futile in one horrific action.

These stories repeat themselves as you go further back in time. All of the prolific shooters in 2017 passed their checks too. That includes the Vegas shooter and the Sutherland Springs shooter. Those two cases alone killed more people than all of the major mass shootings of 2017.

Now, you’re a savvy person. You already know that mass shootings aren’t the real problem. As terrible as they are, they are statistical anomalies, and as such, they aren’t likely to be impacted by any sweeping legislative changes. To really understand how universal background checks affect crime, we could probably compare state laws.

When you do that, you find that California has the most comprehensive background checks of any state. They also have the most gun crime. More importantly, since their most recent round of upgrades to gun-control law, they have seen gun homicides and suicides both increase by 16 percent.

Do you remember that saying that correlation does not imply causation? There’s a second half to it. Anti-correlation disproves causation. If an increase in background checks was met with an increase in gun crime, then they clearly can’t save lives. You’ll find these statistics mirrored across every state that has experimented. In the meantime, the states with the loosest gun-control laws have enjoyed the largest decreases in gun crimes — especially states that have made concealed carry more accessible.

Democrats Aren’t Stupid

Hold on there. It’s easy to pick on Democrats and liberals. We like to point out the failed logic in their claims and policies. It’s hard not to think of them as idiots. Here’s the thing. The party leaders have access to all of this data. They’re fully aware of it. They know, probably even better than you do, that universal background checks won’t save a single life. That’s not really their goal. Increasing background checks and the rest of “common sense” gun control isn’t aiming to lower murder or crime rates. In fact, it’s intended to do nothing at all. That’s the whole point.

You can think of this as Obamacare 2.0. That legislation was designed to fail as an excuse to call for single-payer healthcare. Think about how radically the mainstream Democratic position has changed on health care in the last 8 years. They want to apply the same tactic to gun control.

“Common sense” measures aren’t here to keep us safe. They’re here to prove that only the complete confiscation of all firearms can stop gun crime. Still think Democrats are stupid? Pay attention to the careful language. They don’t claim that they’re going to mitigate violent crime: only gun crime. And, it’s true. If no one has a gun, then no one commits gun crimes. That situation doesn’t make any of us safer, but it does make it a lot harder for us to resist the socialist revolution.

That’s what this is all about. Confiscating guns is a core step in Marxism and the Communist Manifesto. The Democrats understand this, and they’re crafting useless gun legislation specifically to fail. When it does, you can expect them to take another step towards the complete abolition of your freedom. That’s their end game.
