Being the only country in the world where firearm ownership is accepted as an inalienable, God-given right, owning guns is something that is woven into the fabric of American culture. The reasons why firearm ownership is so important to Americans, though, are multifaceted. It turns out that there are three primary tenants that make up the significance of firearm ownership in the United States, and likewise three different types of firearms that fulfill those three purposes.
Below, we’ll take a look at what these three types of firearms are, the three purposes they fulfill, and why every American should own at least one of each.
Firearms for Sport, Hunting, and Survival
The first category of firearms is ones that are used for activities such as hunting and sport shooting. These include firearms such as the versatile .22 long rifle, the 12 gauge shotgun, a bolt action rifle, and many more.
Ironically, many in the gun control crowd will argue that the function of sports and hunting is the only justifiable reason to own a firearm, yet, in the grand scheme of things, this category of firearms is the least important of the three and the only type whose function is not mentioned in the Second Amendment.
That’s not to say that these firearms aren’t important, though. Every American should own a firearm that they can hunt with, whether they are an avid hunter or someone who has never been out into the woods in their life. You never know when hunting may go from a hobby to a means of survival.
Firearms for Personal and Home Defense
Firearms for personal or home defense can be any type of firearm that you keep for the protection of yourself and others. Of course, the most popular firearms for home and personal defense are handguns, with certain shotguns and rifles being common choices as well.
Both data and anecdotal evidence have shown time and time again that the most effective deterrent against violent crime is firearm ownership. The right to self-defense is protected in the Constitution under the Second Amendment, and every American should take advantage of this right.
Choose an effective home defense firearm and keep it in a location that is safe but easily accessible. You may wish to carry a firearm with you for defense as well, either by obtaining a concealed carry permit or carrying it openly if your state permits open carry.
Either way, every American should own a firearm that is well-suited for self-defense. Hopefully you’ll never have to use it, but it’s much better to have a means of self-defense and not need it than it is to need a means of self-defense and not have it.
Firearms to Safeguard against Tyranny
Though the Second Amendment has been interpreted to allow an undeniable right to self-defense, most every Constitutional scholar understands that self-defense was not the primary intention of the Second Amendment. At its core, the Second Amendment was designed as a safeguard against tyranny. It exists to protect and ensure all of the other rights that the Constitution allows.
It serves as a final, all-important check against a tyrannical government, providing Americans with the means to overthrow a tyrannical government should the need to ever arise – just like the armed populace of colonists overthrew the tyrannical British government just a few years before the Constitution was written.
In order for firearm ownership to serve as a safeguard against tyranny and fulfill the most important objective of the Second Amendment, though, American citizens must have access to firearms that match the capabilities of those used by both foreign and domestic militaries.
One could argue that owning such a firearm and becoming a part of the “well-regulated militia” that the Second Amendment creates is not only a right – it’s an obligation.
Every American should own a firearm that they are prepared to take into battle in order to preserve the freedoms that we all hold dear. History shows us all too clearly that freedoms can come and go in the blink of an eye, disappearing in a matter of generations.
Thankfully, the freedoms we have in the United States are better preserved and protected than the freedoms anywhere else in the world. However, firearm ownership is an important part of those protections.
Purchase the most combat capable firearm that you can legally buy and put it away, understanding that you’ll likely never have to use it but also being willing to use it to preserve the rights that so many have already fought and died to preserve.

Wrong word . . . “tenant” is related to residence – one’s arrangement with the owner of the land or building. The word you wanted is “tenet” – similar to principle or core belief.
Contrary to your implication, the Second Amendment does not specify any particular use of arms. Combat, personal defense, and hunting are all valid and lawful uses of arms. In colonial days, a single weapon would have been employed for all three uses by most of the population. While many writers have inferred specific intentions, 2A protects EXACTLY what it says: “The right of the people to keep (own) and bear (carry) arms (weapons)”.
Buy a weapon of war and “put it away”? Only a true novice would do such a thing. The first principle of informed gun ownership is that you must not only know how to maintain it (including disassembly for cleaning) but also that you be WELL PRACTICED in its use. Going into battle with a weapon that you are not VERY familiar with is a damn-sure way to get yourself (or your companions) killed.

I’d say that your take on the 2A is quite limited as compared to mine for reasons stated in other posts.
I hope your intent in saying “Put it away”, didn’t mean not to train and be good with your weapon.
You make good points, but you stop short of pointing out that for almost 100 years ownership of military grade firearms have been severely and unconstitutionaly restricted. Also for about 30 years the ownership of newly produced military grade firearms has been unconstitutionaly prohibited. Also no one seems to be addressing this issue. One can’t easily overthrow tyranny without the basic tools. The second amendment is about overthrowing tyranny. There is a political movement in this country intent on establishing tyranny. What steps can be taken to restore the second amendment with its original effectiveness?
Everyone has made great points on what is also needed. I would add that you need safety and training on the use of your weapons with regular practice. Shooting is a physical skill and you need muscle memory to be effective. Like the saying goes “Use it or lose it”.
